I have consulted many publications but there is not one that is perfect. Some are mainly correct but are occasionally way out of kilter with the norm, and others are very vague as to whether you should be sowing seed or planting seedlings at a given time. Most do not differentiate between different varieties. An exception is the Eden seed catalogue which for example, lists beetroot varieties and when they can be sown, where most publications treat them as all the same. This can result in the sowing of a variety out of season with poor or no result. Carrot and lettuce also have varieties for different seasons. Local papers often copy Sydney planting guides which are quite wrong for the Southern Highlands. For example, "peas - sow late Summer to Autumn," if this is followed here in the Highlands, the frost would prevent the flowers from setting. For cool/cold climates, peas should be sown mid/late winter to summer. Last year I sowed Massey Gem peas on the 19th February and got a couple of picks before the frost stopped them setting. This illustrates the point that you should sow a few seeds early and some late so that you can get a bonus when conditions are right.

In the following table S=September, O=October, etc and * = Under glass.

[Ralph presented this information as a seasonal guide. It has been collated into this single table for convenience. -Ed]
